Make great memories as well as friends, as this state-of-the-art update of a vintage design attracts a lot of attention. Hawley Bowlus, creator of the Spirit of St. Louis, designed and built the first riveted aluminum travel trailer in 1934. Nine decades later, this modern version gives new meaning to the phrase “luxury camping.” Kitchen includes a two-burner gas stovetop, marine-grade fridge, microwave, sink, and storage. Bathroom has a sink, cabinet space, closet, toilet, and shower. Emptying the toilet canister is a snap—no black water tanks to fuss with. The gray water tank drains easily from below the trailer. A comfortable seating area is long enough to stretch out for an afternoon nap and has a cozy dining space; the bed can be arranged as either a queen or two singles in less than a minute. Outside enjoy the awning, table, and solar panel. Hooking up and towing the Bowlus is about as easy as it gets. Its 2300 lb. base weight means owners can tow with a smaller SUV or even a sedan. By comparison, the 16 ft. Airstream Bambi has a base weight of more than 3000 lbs. (We’ve been towing the Bowlus with a Porsche Macan.) The Bowlus Road Chief is an exquisite design both aesthetically and functionally. It offers beauty, simplicity, and precise engineering as well as comfort, ease, and enjoyment.

Why are we selling?

We purchased the Bowlus new in September 2016 when we were living in Santa Barbara, CA. Less than a year later we moved to the midwest and have not, since then, used the Bowlus as much as we’d like. It has been kept in a heated garage; all maintenance is up to date. As much as we have enjoyed it, it is time to pass it along so someone else can make their own amazing memories with it.
